Louise Blank

Louise Blank Betzalel Arts Founder
Louise Blank spent her early years in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a child, she took comfort amongst the sunlight along the banks of the Seine River, evening light streaming through window curtains, and the moonlight drifting amongst snow banks. From those early years, she dreamt of how she could hang onto those feelings of comfort by capturing the light and shadows found in nature.
In 1983, she moved to Calgary. The range and intensity of light created by Alberta’s mountains and Chinooks inspired her to do more than ‘want’ to capture the light. Alberta landscales inspired Louise to begin developing her oil and acrylic representative landscape painting techniques through self-study and professional instruction.
Louise took a break from painting in the 90’s to raise her daughter and pursue her writing career. Fifteen years later, she returned to painting. Since that time, she has studied and photographed the ways in which the time of day, moon phases and weather affect the way sunlight and moonlight illuminate different landscapes. Using oils and a glazing process, she found she could closely capture the luminosity of light and depth of color in Alberta and B.C. landscapes.
